Abstract
In ancient times, gods’ healing power was of great importance. Asclepius, who wasa god of medicine in ancient Greece, became increasingly popular and severalhealing temples called asclepeions were built during his time. This article examinesmusic which was one of the complementary healing practices at the Pergamonasclepeion. The literature on the use of music and other methods in these healingtemples is often fragmented and lacks detail. The purpose of this article is to synthesise extant research and present it in acoherent manner whilst taking into consideration the views of scholars who haveproduced works on the topic. A literature review on medical and archeologicalresearch was conducted. This review shows that asclepeions were the pioneers ofcomplementary medical centres. Additionally, music and other complementaryhealing methods were used together with conventional medical treatments tospeed up the healing process.
