Abstract

Metabolic syndrome is a clinical syndrome in which multiple metabolic risk factors are clustered in an individual. The major components of the syndrome include atherogenic dyslipidemia, inçreased blood pressure, elevated glucose, and a prothrombotic state. Metabolic syndrome is a health problem of modern times and is epidemic in many regions. The number of studies relating to the epidemiology of cardiovascular risk factors has been different in Turkey. Turks have experienced a higher prevalence of low HDL cholesterol concentrations than western populations, therefore Turks may be more susceptible to the metabolic syndrome, which may in part be determined by genetics. However, there are stili only very crude estimates of the total number of people with metabolic syndrome at a national level. We planned to conduct a case-control study to examine the prevalence of syndrome and its components in Turkey. We will survey 1447 men and 1800 women aged *20 years in Aegean geographical area in Türkey. After the survey of the Aegean region, we planned to survey the other geographical regions of Turkey. The results of this study may give an important data to health agencies about the potential social and economic cost of the syndrome, and may provide a basis for the development of prevention programs. This paper describes the method and protocol of the study.
