A)VKİ 40 kg/m2 olan olgular (n=11).
Abstract
Aim: Obesity is a health problem and increases cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. It is also associated with accelerated atherothrombosis. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is associated with increased platelet functions. This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of body mass index (BMI) on MPV in women. Material and Methods: 113 women applied for routine cardiovascular examination were enrolled into the study. The study population was divided into four groups, according to the presence of BMI. Group A (n=18) consisted of normal patients (BMI<25 kg/m2). In Group B (n=32) only overweight patients BMI 25-29.9 kg/m2 were included. In Group C only obese patients (n=52) BMI 30-39.9 kg/m2 and in group D only extreme obese patients (n=11) BMI>40 kg/m2 were included. There is no difference in terms of age, glycose levels, presence of hypertension and lipid profiles between groups. Results: The mean age of Group A, B, C, and D were 48.1±11.5, 52.1±9.6, 50.7±8.1 and 51.2±7.5 years, respectively (p=0.52). Mean BMI in groups A, B, C, and D were 23.2±2.3kg/m2, 27.2±1.7 kg/m2, 34.6±3.7 kg/m2 and 43.7±4.8kg/m2, respectively. The mean MPV in groups have been determined as 7.8±0.93 fL, 8.2±0.81 fL, 8.5±0.77 fL and 9.0±0.95 fL respectively, It is found significant difference in MPV values between groups (p=0.001). In addition, it is found that direct correlation between BMI and MPV (r=0.35; p=0.0001) Conclusion: There is a correlation between BMI and MPV. As a result, the MPV can be a simple and echonomic alternative way in the follow of obese patients.
