Abstract
Aim:To evaluate effects of body mass index (BMI) on ocular hemodynamics with colorDoppler ultrasonography (CDU). Material and Method:Thirty nine healthy subjects without any systemic disease were in-volved in the study. After the measurements of height and weight of each subject, body massindex BMI was calculated (kg/m2). Peak systolic velocity (PCV), end diastolic velocity (EDV)and resistivity index (RI) of ophthalmic artery, central retinal artery and posterior ciliary ar-tery were measured with CDU. Before CDU, intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured withpneumatic tonometry. Subjects were divided in two groups according to BMI. The first groupincluded subjects with BMI<25.0 and the second group included those with BMI>=25.0. Twogroups were statistically compared in terms of IOP, PCV, EDV and RI. Results:Mean age of the subjects (10 female/6 male) in Group 1 was 52.1±12.1 yearswhile it was 51.7±10.7 years in Group 2 (15 female/8 males). There were no statistically sig-nificant differences between the two groups in terms of age, gender, PCV, EDV and RI of oph-thalmic artery, central retinal artery, posterior ciliary artery (p>0.05). Conclusion:BMI does not have a significant impact on ocular hemodynamic parametersmeasured with CDU in healthy people.
