Özet

Dört bölümden oluşan bu makalede Melville’in Yazıcı Bartleby romanı stoa felsefesinin edebiyat dünyasındaki çağdaş bir yapıtı olarak görülür. İlk bölümde Melville’in hayatının kısa bir biyografisi verilir ve Yazıcı Bartleby romanının felsefi önemi ortaya konulur. İkinci bölümde, stoa felsefesinin bu romanla ilişkilendirilebilecek temel öğretileri Zenon’un ve Epiktetos’un düşünceleriyle sergilenir. Üçüncü bölümde, Yazıcı Bartleby romanının varoluşçu felsefe bakımından bir değerlendirilmesi yapılır. Sonuç ya da dördüncü bölümde, Duvarlar Arasında adlı şarkıya yer verilir ve Bartleby’nin tutumundan çıkarılan on sekiz sonuç değerlendirilir.

Abstract

In this article -An Evaluation of the Novel Bartleby, The Scrivener by Melville From the Perspective of Existential Philosophy- that consists of four parts, the novel Bartleby, The Scrivener by Melville is seen as a contemporary work of stoic philosophy in the world of literature. In the first part a short biography of Melville’s life and philosophical importance of the novel are presented. In the second part the basic doctrines of stoic philosophy that closely related to the novel are exhibited with the ideas of Zenon and Epictetus. In the third part an evaluation of the novel is made from the perspective of existential philosophy. In the fourth and the last part a place is given to the song called Between the Walls and eighteen outcomes drawn from Bartleby’s attitude are assessed.
