Abstract

Free cash flows are regarded as an indicator of economic power of businesses. Accordingly, it has got a great importance not only for business owners and managers but also for external fund-raising people to evaluate the financial state of the company correctly. There exist various approaches in the literature for free cash flows to be determined. Yet, Lehn-Poulsen model has been preferred in our study as it is pretty old and one of the most preferred models. In the research, free cash flows of 21 companies in manufacturing industry sector during the period of 2013-2018 in BIST 100 have been calculated and the capital structure that has got the regulative role over the agent cost of the relevant sums according to Jensen’s free cash flow theory, and their effects on dividend and interest payment variables have been tested. Furthermore, effective profitability rate has also been included in the analysis in the name of determining cash flows-profitability correlation. According to the research findings, a significant correlation couldn’t be found between free cash flows calculated through Lehn-Poulsen model and dividend payout ratio and interest payment ratio; however, in terms of capital structure (financial leverage ratio) and shareholders’ equity profitability ratio, a meaningful correlation has been identified statistically-a negative and positive one respectively.
