Abstract
Boronizing is a thermochemical surface hardening treatment. The main aim of boronizing is to form ferroboron layer on surface of steel. Elementel boron diffuses into iron materials and therefore ferroboron phases such as $Fe_2B$ and FeB are formed. Due to the hardness of these phases, wear resistance of ferroboron is high and friction coefficient of ferroboron is low since ferroboron is very hard. Hardness and tribological properties of the boronized metal are maintained at the high temperatures. Boride layer have a good corrosion resistance aganist to some acids and molten metals. Boronizing process are carried out in solid, liquid and gaseous as conventional boronizing methods. Recently, plasma boronizing and ion implantation boronizing also have been used. Thickness of boride layer depends on boronizing medium and concentration, processing temperature and period of time, composition of substrate metal. Boronizing effects are mostly exist on hardness of material. The hardness of ferroboron layer is 10 - 20 times much more than that of substrate metal. Steels which have hardness value of 120- 200 HV reach 1500-2200 after boronizing.
