Abstract
Twenty three morphological and five phenological characters were studied on 33 geno-types representing nine Corylus species via phylogenetic analysis based on parsimony. Twenty seven characters were parsimony informative. Three groups appeared in the clado-gram, each containing three species. The first group included all representatives of the shrub species C. avellana, C. americana, and C. heterophylla which typically have slit husks (involucre) that are flared at the tip. Many of the C. avellana accessions failed to form a monophyletic group due to the great diversity for morphological and phenological traits pre-sent in this species. The second group included all representatives of the shrub species C. cornuta, C. californica, and C. sieboldiana. These three species have tubular husks with closely attached bristle-like hairs. Our data supports the suggestions that C. californica is a separate species or a subspecies rather than a variety of C. cornuta. The third group includ-ed all representatives of the tree species C. colurna, C. chinensis, and C. jacquemontii. These species have single trunks and do not produce suckers. They have thick and fleshy husks, very large basal scars on their nuts, and epigeal seed germination. The clustering pat-tern was consistent with classification based on interspecific hybridization and sequences of the DNA-ITS region.
