Abstract
Aim: There is a serious inflow of foreign words to Turkish language in the last years. The aim of this study is to investigate the degree of language soiling in the scientific papers of the Turkish pediatric surgeons and to discuss the probable causes of this problem. Methods: The number of total and foreign words in the titles, key words, selected papers and summaries in the 15 volumes (33 journals) of the Turkish Journal of Pediatric Surgery (Pediatrik Cerrahi Dergisi) that had been published between 1987 and 2001 were determined by counting word by word. All of the titles and key words are evaluated. 15 summaries (one for each year) that had been exactly translated to English were evaluated. The papers were divided into 5 main subject groups as; gastrointestinal system, tumors-masses, genitourinary system, experimental studies and respiratory system, and one paper in each group for each year was selected. In addition to word count the papers were evaluated for some linguistic characteristics. Results: 890 (47 %) of the 1896 words in 302 titles were foreign and 284 (15 %) of these had exact Turkish synonyms. There were only 18 titles (6 %) that had not contained any foreign words. There were 1458 Turkish and 1353 English words in selected summaries, and 415 (28 %) words in the Turkish summaries were of English words. There were 1337 Turkish and 1336 English words in the key words of 269 papers and 832 (62 %) of these were same in both language. The total ratio of foreign words in the selected papers was above 30 % and the ratios in subject groups were as follows; gastrointestinal system 32.5 %, tumors-masses 29 %, genitourinary system 28 %, experimental studies 32 %, and respiratory system 29 %. Conclusion: Inflow of foreign words into Turkish may easily he called as invasion of our mother language and it can be observed even by walking in the street. Our simple study has shown that one of every four words in our journal is of a foreign language. The specific scientific terms are best understood by the scientists who study on specific branches. Our mission is to try to find/derive Turkish words for the terms in our field. We always have to remember that we have a great responsibility for not only scientific hut also linguistic contents of our papers, and as a first step we have to try to avoid foreign words those have exact synonyms in Turkish.
