Abstract
Aim of the study was to investigate the accumulation of the toxic element lead in several tissues that is consumed with the diet and its effect on the live weight gain of broilers. 60 one day-old Avian chicks were used in this experiment which were devided evenly into one control and one treatment group. The control group was fed a normal diet, whereas the treatment group received a diet containing 300 ppm lead. At the fourth week of the trial the live weight of chicks was measured. Furthermore, during the feeding process, samples of blood, liver, kidney, breast muscle and bone tissues of the chicks were taken from the animals. The amount of lead in these tissues was measured by using the atomic absorption spectrophotomefer. It was observed that the average live weight of the chicks in the control group was higher (78.7%) compared to the treatment group. On the other hand, the feed efficiency of the control group was better (83.8 %) than the treatment group. The decrease in live weight in the treatment group which received feed containing Pb, and the increase in the amount of Pb in the tissues were statistically significant (p<0.001). In chicks which were fed additional lead through their diet, the highest lead concentration was measured in the bone tissue. However, the most significant increase in respect to the control group was recognized in the blood (p< 0.001). As a result of this study, it was concluded that the intake of this elements at toxic levels with diet can cause these elements to be found at a higher concentration in blood and bone.
