Abstract
Uropathogenic Escherichia coli strains causing urinary tract infections adhere to epithelial cells by their P fimbria. Some antibiotic groups in sub-minimum inhibitory concentrations (sub-MIC) are known to decrease adherence of uropathogenic E. coli strains. By depending on this, the effect of meropenem in sub-MICs (1/4 to 1/16 MIC) to the adhesion of P-fimbriated E. coli strains to the buccal epithelial cells was invastigated in comparison with the effects of tetracycline and gentamicin. In relative to the effects of tetracycline and gentamicin in sub-MICs to the adherence levels, meropenem in the same sub-MICs was also determined to meaningfully inhibit the adhesion to human buccal epithelial cells of 4 uropathogenic E. coli strains in vitro (p<0.005).
