Abstract
The Turkmen, who have been living in the Syrian geography for over a thousand years, are a communitythat has left deep-rooted traces in the historical process. The Turkmen, who mostly live in and aroundAleppo, have undergone a great transformation with modern times. The collapse of the Ottomans andthe social turmoil during the turbulent process of the emergence of modern Syria left marked marks inthe formation of all political and social structures after independence. The distinguishing feature of thesetraces is observed in the relations between all ethnic and sectarian elements forming the Syrian society. TheTurkmen community, customized under the French mandate, did not look very charming for the nationalistArab rulings in Syria during the post-1946 nation building process. However, this approach, from the factthat the Turkmens whose existence was over a thousand years did not see the positive role they could playin the construction of the new state, maintained its existence as much as the recent period. Turkmen areaffected by the Turkey-Syria relations, brought to live in a country filled with political turmoil while tryingto cope with adversity, it gave the fight to protect the assets. Today this great cultural heritage is on the vergeof a new era with the Arab Spring.
