Abstract
AIM: To investigate whether transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) has superiority over placebo TENS at labour pain. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 30 primigravid women who accepted to the hospital for their delivery were randomly assigned into two groups. TENS was applied to 15 subjects and placebo TENS was applied to the other 15 during their labour. Intensity and quality of labour pain, labour duration and labour outcomes were compared between the groups. Intensity of pain was measured on a visual analogue scale (VAS) and, quality of pain was measured by using the scale of "Pain-0-Meter". RESULTS: No significant difference (p>0.05) was found between the two groups in relation to intensity of pain which was measured by using VAS. When the groups were compared according to quality of pain, it's obseved that reactive pain scores belonging to the third phase of the first stage and second stage of labour were different (p<0.05) between the groups in favour of TENS. There were no significant differences in duration of labour (p>0.05) and Apgar scores (1st. and 5th. minutes ) (p>0.05) between the two groups. CONCLUSION: The results showed that, TENS had no superiority over placebo TENS but it might increase the pain tolerance by changing the quality of pain.
