Abstract
Objective: Gloves are perforated frequently during plastic surgery operations and many of them are unrecognized. They produce an important risk of transmission of viral infections, particularly Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV. Material and Method: In the present study, 224 gloves, used in 66 operations, were compared with 140 control gloves with respect to hidden perforations. Results: Perforation rates of surgeons were 26.41% (28.57% in consultants and 24% in residents), it was found to be 19.49% in 1. assistants. The rates of glove perforation is 13.88%, 18.60% and 37.87% in operations lasting less than 60 minutes, between 60-120 minutes, and over 120 minutes, respectively. Conclusion: When the operation period is over 120 minutes, the risk of perforation increases owing to the use of greater number of tools and sutures. Perforation rate is also influenced by the duration of the operation and the experience of the surgeon. As the duration of operation is prolonged, gloves may be replaced every 90 minutes or gloves that run a higher risk of perforation due to excessive use should be changed before the suturing stage.
