Abstract

In this study, 50 patients, between the ages 4-18 months, followed up by Dr. Sami Ulus Children's Hospital with a diagnosis of malnutrition were included malnourished patients were classified according to the Welcome-Thrust classification and serum vitamin B!2, folic acid and iron levels were evaluated in each class. In this study, the rate of anemia in malnourished children were found to be 88%. Mostly the anemia was mild to moderate in severty. Microcytic anemia was more common in the low body weight grup (26%), In cases of severe anemia, the most common causes were vitamin BI2 (35.7%) and iron (42.8%) deficiency anemias. In 28.6% of patient serum vitamin BI2 level and in 10.71% of cases serum folic acid levels were found to be low. Thrombocytopenia was seen in 12 % of patients, whereas leukopenia was determined in 8%.In this study we mainly emphasize that in cases with severe anemia, vitamin Bi2 and iron defiencies must be searched.
