%11.0'i kırmızı eti, %56.8'i tereyağını hiç tüketmemektedir.

Abstract

Objective: A study was carried out to determine the nutritional status of a group of elderly people who were hospitalized at Baskent University Hospitals Network for various reasons. Material and Method: This study was performed among 91 old, conscious and cooperative patients hospitalized at Baskent University Hospitals Network between March-May 2001 for various reasons. Data was collected by a questionnaire form consisting of questions related on frequency of food consumption of the study group by face- to- face interview technique then, findings of physical examination and anthropometrical measures were recorded. Results: 56% of study population were female, 44% were male. Mean age was 71.7±5.8, 87.9% of population were living with someone and 76.9% were living at province centers. The mean of Body Mass Index (BMI), Triceps Skinfold Thickness (TST) and Waist Hip Ratio (WHR) was 25.2±3.9, 12.8±4.8, and 1.0±0.1 respectively for male while these results were 27.7±5.6, 16.5±6.9, and 1.0±0.2 for females. Statistically significant relationships were found in BMI and TST between genders (p<0.05). The study results showed that 63.7% of the study population was consuming 6 meals, fruit and vegetable consumption of the study group was found to be 92.3% per day while cheese and milk/yogurt consumption was determined as 84.4% and 93.4% respectively. It was also determined that only 11.0% of the study population consumed meat once or twice in a week and 56.8% never consumed saturated fats. Conclusion: The nutritional status of elderly people in the study group was evaluated as good. We think that the main reason of this result is because; most of them are currently living with their families.
