Abstract
Aim of the study was to investigate the accumulation of the toxic element cadmium in several tissues that is consumed with the diet and their effect on the increase of the live weight of broilers. 62 one day-old chicks were used in this experiment which consisted of one control and one treatment group. The control group chicks were fed normal diet, whereas treatment group chicks were fed diets containing 25 ppm cadmium. At the fourth week of age the live weight of chicks was measured. Furthermore, during the feeding process blood, liver, kidney, breast muscle and bone tissues of the chicks were taken from the animals. The amount of cadmium in these tissues was measured by using the atomic absorption spectrophotometer. It was observed that the live weight of the chicks in the treatment group was less compared to the control group. The decrease in live weight in the treatment group which had been fed a diet containing Cd were statistically significant (p<0.001). Also, the increase in the amount of Cd in the tissues of treatment group was statistically significant (p<0.001). In the group which was fed diet containing additional cadmium, the most significant increase both in the percentage and in the quality of cadmium element was detected in the kidney tissue. As a result of this study, it was concluded that the intake of this element at toxic levels with the diet might result in finding it at a higher concentration in some tissues.
