Abstract

The aim of this study is to develop a suitable scale for examining the job characteristics of the teaching profession according to the teachers’ opinions. During the development process of the scale, an items pool was created for the teaching profession which is based on Hackman and Oldham's work characteristics model. Then the expert opinion was consulted for the content validity. After the content validity study a pilot study was conducted with the draft scale by the participation of 167 teachers working in public secondary schools in Ankara. At this stage the data were analyzed by exploratory factor analysis (EFA). As a result of the EFA, a five-factor scale named as Job Characteristics of Teaching Profession Scale (JCTPS) was developed. The main application of the JCTPS was carried out by the participation of 413 teachers selected by stratified sampling from the universe of Ankara province. In the main application, the validity of the JCTPS was assessed by the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and the reliability of the JCTPS was assessed by the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. The CFA results confirmed the five-dimensional structure of the JCTPS developed in the pilot study. The Cronbach’s alpha results also revealed that the JCTPS was a reliable data collection tool. According to findings of pilot and main studies, the JCTPS is found to be a valid and reliable scale.
