Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the distributions of body coat color and also investigate body measurements of Turkish native horses at different age and sex groups in Kars region. A total of 117 horses were divided into four separate groups based on their ages ( 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 and (9 years old ) to obtain the body measurements. The distributions of body coat colour of these horses were, as percentages, 41.46, 41.46, 12.20, 2.44, 1.63 and 0.81 for grey, bay, chestnut, black, splashed white and buckskin respectively. Additionally, the least squares means of height at withers (CY), body length (BEU), heart girth circumference (GC), chest depth (GD), chest width (GG), height at rump (SY), cannon circumference (OIC), head length (BAU) and ears length (KU) of these horses (3-years-old and older) were 137.26, 137.60, 151.17, 61.03, 38.71, 137.66, 17.23, 54.78 and 16.59 cm respectively. The levels of GC, GD, GG and BAU were found to be least in the groups of 3-4 years-old, whereas they were the highest in the group of 7-8 years-old (P<0.05). The effect of sex was significant on the values of CY, KU and OIC (P<0.05).
