Abstract

When the number and tone of the studies made on divorce in the Ottoman society are examined, it looks as if familial problems were not experienced in those times, almost no divorce happened between spouses or they broke up in a very civilized manner and overcame the issue of divorce easily. Yes, based on the advantage they gained by their sex, men could have woken up to a new day as if they had never married... But how about women, was it the same for them, too? Considering that even today individuals with higher education background experience various problems after a divorce, and that especially women pass through the phases of coping with a divorce and adaptation, it then becomes obvious that Ottoman women with their poor level of education and finance certainly did not enjoy easy divorces or an easy subsequent life but faced certain troubles. However, the difficulty of accessing women's experiences makes it hard to identify those situations because the rate of literacy was poor among women, court records and documents were deprived of details, and the politicians and intellectuals of the period did not leave memoirs behind. But although the sources are scarce, it is possible based on the experiences of divorce in our day to determine the difficulties experienced after divorces in the Ottoman society and the divorcing experiences of women. This is what exactly the current study attempts to do
