Abstract
In this study; the water quality of Damsa Dam Lake was searched which meets the drinking and irrigation water need of Nevsehir city. Within the scope ogf this study, a sampling was carried out with 112 samples taken from 28 measurement stations in 4 seasons such as Spring (May-2015), Summer ( July-2015), Fall (October-2015) and Winter (December-2015). The coordinates of measurement stations where the samples were taken were determined by Magellan Explorist 710 GPS instrument. Spot samples were taken from each station according to the standards of TS S667-3 sample transport and conservation and were taken to the laboratory on the same day. In all water samples taken from the surface, quality parameters such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonium (NH4 ), as well as concentrations of heavy metals such as iron (Fe), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) were determined. Moreover, water quality of dam water was evaluated as positional by means of Geographical Information System (GIS). When thematic maps formed for each parameter were investigated, it was determined that water quality of Damsa Dam was Ist class (excellent) in terms of temperature and pH, was IInd class in terms of dissolved oxygen concentration (good), was IInd class in terms of ammonium (NH4 +) (good). It was also indicated that concentrations of iron (Fe+2) and copper Cu+2 were high and included relatively low concentration of zinc (Zn+2). As a result of the study; it was concluded that Damsa Dam water was efficient for irrigation in agriculture in terms of dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature and ammonium parameters, however, it was not efficient for usage when heavy metals and toxic materials were taken into consideration. In order to use water efficiently and for the sustainability of ecological balance, water qualities should be tracked periodically in certain periods and should be provided with sufficient interferences in the case of pollutions.
