Abstract

The most important of the wishes of parents is that his/her child stay on his/her own two feet, be a well regarded citizen in the future; in other words, parents want their children to be able to "earn his/her life" alone.Undoubtedly, this thought and emotion process valid for all parents is perceived more intensely by families who have severely mentally retarded children. Generally, in this process the mother undertakes more responsibility than the father, and for this reason, she encounters more difficult problems and finds herself in hopelessness. This study was made in order to display the mothers' emotions and views on their child's future and the hopelessness level of mothers who have mentally retarded child. This research was put into practise in 5 education and rehabilitation centers for mentally retarded children in Ankara and 146 mothers who came to the centers with their children have been interviewed. According to the findings of the research; more than half of the samples (54.8%) had graduated from elementary school, one third of the samples (35.6%) were in the 26-30 age group, three fourth of the samples (75.3%) were housewives and 85.6 % of them were married. Nearly all of them (91.5%) were living in anxiety and worry because they wondered what would happen to their children after their death, approximately half of them (44.5%) told that their husbands did not support them while they were carrying out the responsibility of the care of their children. Mothers’ average hopelessness score was 7.94±3.45. It was also seen that hopelessness level was decreasing with increasing education level.
