Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Presentation of a rare case,< pneumothorax and. subcutaneous emphysema following a difficult delivery MATERIAL and METHOD: A male newborn developed bilateral pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum and subcutaneous emphysema after a complicated delivery (shoulder dystocia). • RESULTS: Endotracheal intubation and chest tube insertion were required due to severe respiratory distress. Possibly, these symptoms were caused by tracheal rupture. The newborn did not show any respiratory distress after extubation. He was discharged from the hospital in a good condition on the sixth day. CONCLUSIQN: Such an unexpected complication in the newborn following a delivery necessitates presence of facilities which enables immediate and proper intervention.
