Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To measure serum CA 15-3 and CA 72-4 levels in different phases of the menstrual cycle in healthy women. STUDY DESIGN: Serum concentrations of CA 125, CA 15-3, €A 72-4, estradiol and progesterone were measured five times in different phases of the menstrual ceycle in 30 women with ovuiation. RESULTS: Serum CA 125 levels were significantly elevated during menstrual phase. Also, 20% of women had false positive rate during menstrual phase for serum CA 125 levels (above cut off value of 35 U/ml). But serum CA 15-3 and CA 72-4 levels were not statistically different among phases. In addition, in any phase, on women had cutoff valve of serum CA 15-3 above (38 U/ml) and serum CA 72-4 above (4 U/ml). Although there was a negative correlation between serum progesterone concentration and serum CA 125 levels in late luteejîs'phase, there was significant correlation between neither serum CA 15-3 nor estradiol and progesterone concentrations, and similarly between neither serum CA 72-4 nor estradiol and progesterone concentrations in any phases of the menstrual cycle. CONCLUSION: When serum CA 15-3 and CA 72-4 determinations are used for diagnosis of ovarian cancer, sampling may be done in any phase of the menstrual cycle. The production of serum CA 15-3 and CA 72-4 are not under hormonal controls of serum estradiol and progesterone levels.
