Abstract

OBJECTIVE: distension of the endometrial cavity with isotonic solutions during transvaginal sonography was used to confirm the presence of intracavitary pathology. STUDY DESING: Sixty-three patients between 27-65 years old (mean+SD: 43.37±8.62) with abnormal uterine bleeding were taken to the study. Intrauterine catheter was inserted, under direct abdominal and vaginal ultrasonographic examination, sterile saline solution was slowly infused and compared with invasive endometrial sampling report. RESULTS: The pathology report confirmed eight patients (12.69%) with benign endometrial polyps, five (7.9%) with submucous myomas, five (62.5%) with endometrial hyperplasia, one (12.5%) with endometrial adometrial adenocarcinomas, and two (25%) with irregular shedding. Of the 63 patients 13 (20.6%) had ultrasonohysterographic and pathologic evidence of fibroids, yet only five (7.9%) of these had a submucouse compenent. Eight (69%) of 13 patients had benign endometrial polyps. Of the 63 patients eight (12.69%) had ultrasonohysterographic endometrial irregularity. CONCLUSION: We conclude that this technique was available, useful, noninvasive, and inexpansive method to evaluate endometrial pathology in abnormal uterine bleeding patients.
