Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To determine that fetal and neonatal prognosis progressively worsens with decreasing amniotic fluid index (AFI) value. STUDY DESIGN: Two hundred eighty-five postdate pregnancies with reliable dates underwent ultrasound assessment of amniotic fluid volume and correlated with perinatal outcome. RESULTS: In postdate pregnancies >42 weeks, the mean values of AFI were 12.9+64 cm. Oligohydramnios defined as an AFI <5.0 cm is associated with increased incidence of caesarean section for fetal distress and meconium staining. Furthermore, neonatal outcome was significantly poorer in patients with AFI < 5 cm than those with higher AFI values. CONCLUSION: In this study, it was suggested, that API estimation was an effective method in predicting fetal distress in postterm pregnancies.
