Abstract
OBJECTIVE: About 7% of pregnancies are seen in adolescent age in Turkey. We would like to find out if perinatal outcomes in this age group would differ from that of pregnant women aged between 20-35. STUDY DESIGN: In this retrospective analysis of teenage pregnancy, we searched maternal and obstetric problems and compared the results with the control group. Thirty-four and 40 pregnant women were included in the study and control groups, respectively. Age, gestational age, marriage between relatives, mean arterial pressure, birth weights, Apgar scores, newborns with anomalies, maternal hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration were compared. In addition, fetal persentation, multiple pregnancies, premature rupture of membranes, preterm labor, placental anomalies, preeclampsia/eclampsia, intra-uterine growth restrictions were also evaluated. RESULTS: We found a higher rate of preeclampsia (P<0.02), lower birth weight (P<0.004), and Apgar scores (P<0.04). There was no difference in terms of anemia. CONCLUSION: We concluded that preterm delivery and lower birth weight were the 2 major concerns of adolescent pregnancy, and problems related to adolescent age could be overcome by adequate prenatal care.
