Abstract
Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus is one of the leading causes of nosocomial infections throughout the world. The epidemiology of nosocomial methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections detected in GATA Education Hospital between 2003 and 2004 is presented in this study. The proportion of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections among the total nosocomial infections with respect to years were 20.8% in 2003, and 11.2% in 2004, respectively (p<0.001). The proportions of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections in the total Staphylococcus aureus infections were 92.3% and 90.5% in 2003 and 2004, respectively (p=0.672). When the distribution of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections with respect to the departments was assessed, General Surgery (20.3%) and Neurosurgery Departments were the leading clinics in the years 2003 and 2004, respectively. When the data were taken into consideration according to the site of infection, most of the infections were bloodstream infections in methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections in both years.
