Abstract
The assessment of the presentation of national public health congress (Turkey, 1988-1998) Aim: Abstracts are essential elements of scientific papers. In this study it was aimed to assess quantity and quality of the abstracts presented to the national public health congresses in Turkey. Methods: The abstracts of the studies were assessed from national public health congress books, considering the place the study was carried out, authors, the design of study and their data presentation. The data were codified and estimated by using descriptive statistics in computer. Results: Of 1005 abstracts of presentation 9.8% did -not include information which could be considered as summaries or abstracts. 62.6% of the presentation submitted by public health departments. The median number of the author of presentation was 3. Abstracts were included average 163$\pm$68 words. The data were mostly collected by questionnaire method (59.6%) and studies were mostly cross-sectional type (45.6%). 18.4% of abstracts did not include numeric data, while 40.4% of analytical and experimental studies did not mention the significance of the statistics between data. Conclusion: It was concluded that in publication of the abstracts of presentation of public health congresses, the rules of publication were not sufficiently taken care of consideration. It may be suggested that public health academicians should be more sensitive in this issue.
