Abstract

Nausea, vomiting, upper abdominal fullness and pain are very frequent symptoms in patients with chronic renal failure. Patients with renal failure usually show high blood urea levels. It can be postulated that the urea content of the mucus in the stomach will be in equilibration with the blood urea levels. This could be a risk factor for acquiring Helicobacter pylori (HP). This study aimed to determine the prevalence of HP in patients with chronic renal failure. The prevalance of HP was determined using ELISA technique for IgG antibodies to HP, rapid urease test and Toluidine blue staining method. 72.5% (29/40) of the normal renal function group, 67.5% (27/40) of the chronic renal failure group were positive HP infection, and the prevalance did not significant differ statistically between these two groups (p>0.05). The higher urea levels in the blood of patients with renal failure do not seem to be a risk factor for infection with HP.
