Abstract

Operational research education, which is the most basic discipline in quantitative decision making, has a positive effect on the development of countries and providing competitive advantage to them. In recent years, declining of quantitative abilities of the students who enroll in the Faculty of Business Administration and the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences can negatively affect their approach to the operations research course as a quantitatve course. In this study, attitudes of students those educated in the Department of Business Administration and Department of Management Information Systems in the Faculty of Business Administration in Düzce University for 2018-2019 academic year spring semester were examined. In addition, the attitudes of these two departments towards the course were compared and the relations of gender, repetition of class, high school and the class level of the students to the course were investigated. In this context, a total of 296 survey are distributed to the students (179 business administration and 117 management information systems) and 232 of them were found suitable for the evaluation. The data were analyzed with SPSS 22 program and, frequency analysis, factor analysis, two independent sample t-tests and one-way variance analysis (ANOVA) were performed. As a result of the factor analysis of the operations research attitude scale, four basic dimensions were obatained. On the other hand, the findings of the research revealed that there were some differences between these two department students’ attitudes towards the operation research course. Furthermore, it was observed that the attitude towards the operation reserach course was sligthly negative. For this reason, improving the attitudes of the students of the faculty of business towards the operation reserach course, which was one of the crucial quantitative courses, was important for the students who would work in various operational based enterprises in the future.
