Abstract
This study aims to understand individual and group models developed by mathematics pre-service teachers during a model-eliciting activity called “Kim 500 Milyar İster?”. To achieve this purpose, we developed a monitoring system, composed of a Kanban board and instructions for how to use it, with the help of this monitoring system individual development as well as group development has been examined during the modeling activity. Nine pre-service mathematics teachers enrolled in elementary mathematics teacher education undergraduate program (6) and mathematics education graduate program (3) participated to this study which is designed as a multiple-case study using qualitative data collection and analysis methods. The results indicated that pre-service teachers developed individual models different from the final group model, and particularly the one with a strong mathematical explanation was selected by the group to further develop as a group model. On the other hand, development of a new and independent group model through integration of several individual models was not observed. Furthermore, the study showed that the monitoring system provided pre-service teachers with opportunities to a) record their ideas, b) self-monitor the changes in their ideas, and c) make their contribution to the group model visible. In this context, individual and group model monitoring system made it possible to monitor individual developments as well as group development in modeling activity. In this study, pre-service teachers developed different individual approaches and the approach that found strong support mathematically from these approaches was chosen to be developed by the group.
