Abstract

Objective: This research was planned for the purpose of evaluating the effect of foot massage as a complementary treatment method on degree edema, pain, fatigue and sleeplessness in pregnant with physiologic edema in lower limbs. Methods: The research was conducted between March 1-August 31, 2007, at Manisa Province Health Ministry's Central Primary Health Care Clinic Number 1. Pregnant women willing to participate in the study were included in the study, 40 as the experimental group and 40 as the control group. Experimental group’s pregnant women were given a 10 minute right foot and a 10 minute left foot for a total of 20 minute massage of their feet. The massage and control groups were matched statistically for age, number of pregnancies, week of pregnancy and degree of edema, and groups with homogeneous distribution were formed. Results: A 20 minute massage for five days was not found to have an effect on degree edema in the lower limbs of pregnant women but decreased the women's pain, fatigue and sleeplessness. Conclusion: Foot massage for five days is effective to remove pain, fatigue and sleeplessness in lower limbs of pregnancy.
