Abstract

In transportation industry, firms can not increase their production with extra labor in the short run, contradictory to other sectors. For an increase in output, another production factor, Capital, here means ships, could not be increased within at least two years in average due to the time lag that spends in shipyards during ship’s ensemble as well. The only possible way to supply more ships transpor- tation service in the short run is to increase the operating (cruise) speed of the ships. By doing so, the shipowners use the nature element of production factor. The only possible way also comes with additional costs. Increase in speed me- ans more fuel cost for ships. If the increase in freight rates comprises the extra costs in fuel; it is suitable. In this study, this mechanism is tested for port’s turnaround time. Could any savings in time at ports attribute a positive value for ships’ voyage costs? The related economic literature for this economic dilemma is discussed and some contributions are made.
