Abstract

An examination or analysis of a translation along with the rules of the science of translation would determine, before all else, modalities of the translation. Since the very first translation of Robinson into Turkish in 1864, several translations of the book were published. These translations can be categorised as ““precise translations”” and ““adapted translation”” and there are also subcategories like ““word-by-word translations”” or ““free translations””, ““moderated adaptations”” or ““transformed adaptations””. Besides these translations there are also few plagiarised ones. An analysis of the Robinson translations would throw a new light on the one hand on how the history of Turkish translation and prose evolved and on the other hand on how the tendencies and forced interferences of political authorities affected the continuity of translation or language policies.
