Abstract

Mustafa Akdağ’s article “The Economic Position of Ottoman Empire in the Periods of Foundation and Great Expension”, published as two seperate chapter in 1949 and 1950 is accepted to be one of the the first economic historical articles in Turkish historical studies. In the article the triumph of the Ottoman Empire over the other Turkish Beyliks and Byzantine Empire was claimed to be related to the “Marmara Economic Unit”, which apperaed in the region mostly due to the economic factors. According to this thesis, Marmara and the surroinding area had many economic advantages. In addition, the profit-aimed relationship between Greek living in the region and the immigrant Turks created a harmony and this caused the Ottoman Beylik to be more powerful. This thesis supported in the article was considered unimportant and gained no significant reaction. It was criticisized strongly by Halil İnalcık, one of the historians of the time. Mustafa Akdağ did not reply to that criticism and he did not mention about his thesis anymore. Today, however, many studies in favor of some main characteristics of Akdağ’s thesis have been published.
