Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the relationship between the academic success of the primary pre-service teachers’ in the course of Initial Reading and Writing Teaching Course and their thinking styles. In line with this aim, the thinking styles of the primary pre-service teachers’ and the academic successes of the Initial Reading and Writing Teaching Course were determined. Differentiation status is explained according to gender, GPA and university variables. In addition, the thinking styles of the primary pre-service teachers and the relationship between the academic achievements of the Initial Reading and Writing Teaching Course were examined. The sample of the study consisted of 673 prospective classroom teachers studying in seven different education faculties in the spring semester of 2011-2012 academic year. The data were collected with the " Initial Reading and Writing Teaching Academic Achievement Test" developed by the researcher and the Thinking Styles Inventory developed by Sternberg and Wagner (1992) and adapted to Turkish by Fer (2005). According to the results of the research, pre-service teacher teachers prefer legislative thinking style than the other thinking styles. This is followed by the executive and judgemental thinking styles, respectively. It has been determined that there is no difference in legislative and judgemental thinking styles of primary pre-service teachers according to gender and grade point average, but there is a difference in executive thinking style according to these variables. It has been determined that there is no difference in the executive and judgmental thinking styles according to the university variable where the pre-service teachers are studying, but there is a difference in the legislative thinking style according to this variable. In addition, it was understood that there was a low level of a significant relationship between the academic success of primary pre-service teachers in the course of Initial Reading and Writing Teaching and the executive thinking style.
