Abstract
Objective: To compare the pregnancy results in adolescent age group with pregnancy results of the women in childbearing age. Methods: Between 2010 and 2015, among patients who applied to Erzincan University Faculty of Medicine, Mengücek Gazi Education and Research Hospital, prenatal examinations, and birth certificates of adolescents aged <= 19 years, and pregnant women aged 20-34 years were retrospectively evaluated. Results: Mean age of adolescent pregnant women was 17.3±0.9 years (14-19 years), whereas mean age of the pregnant women in their childbearing age as the control group was determined as 26.6±3.9 years. In the adolescent group, 4.5% of the participants, and 27.4 % of the pregnant women in the reproductive age group were smokers Among women who gave birth in our hospital regular prenatal follow-up rates were 73.4%, and, 79.38% in adolescent pregnants, and in the control group aged between 20, and 34 years, respectively. When the cases were evaluated as prevalence of antepartum, and intrapartum complication rates, the rate of preterm birth was observed to be significantly higher in the adolescent group; however the rate of cesarean delivery was higher in the control group aged between 20-34 years. There was no difference between the groups in terms of perinatal parameters. Conclusion: Even though any increase in perinatal problems with adolescent pregnant women is not observed compared to reproductive age group; nevertheless, larger-scale studies are needed in order to reduce the number of such pregnancies and minimise perinatal complications.
