Bulgular: Öğrencilerin %54.1’i (n=13) 4. sınıf, %45.8’i (n=11) 3. sınıfa devam etmektedir. Öğrencilerin %62.5’i (n=15) hastaneye yatma deneyimi yaşamamıştır. “Büyüyünce hemşire olmak ister misiniz?” sorusuna %28.2’si (n=7) evet yanıtını vermiştir. Görüşme sonrası öğrencilerden alınan yanıtlar doğrultusunda hemşirelerin yaptığı iş ile ilgili tedavi uygulamaları, doktora yardım etme ve bakım uygulamaları (hasta ve çocuk) temaları belirlenmiştir. Sonuç: Öğrencilerin hemşirelik mesleğini iğne yapan, tedavi uygulayan, doktora yardımcı, hastalara, çocuklara bakan ve hastaları iyileştiren bir meslek olarak değerlendirdiği saptanmış, büyük bir kısmının gelecekte hemşire olmak istemediği belirlenmiştir.

Abstract

Aim: Evaluations of hospitalized children’s perceptions about the nursing profession have been identified in literature, but no study investigating the perceptions of healthy children about the nursing profession at the primary school level has been found. This study aimed to evaluate the views of primary school children on the nursing profession. Methods: This research was planned in a qualitative phenomenological design. Twenty-four students from a primary school in Altındağ, Ankara, Turkey were interviewed for the research until repeated data were obtained using a semi-structured interview form. In order to carry out the research, parents and children were informed about the study, and verbal consent was obtained from the children and written consent was obtained from their parents who agreed to participate in the research. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and divided into themes by three pediatric nursing instructors. Results: Of the students, 54.1% (n=13) were in the fourth grade and 45.8% (n=11) were in the third grade. Of them, 62.5% (n=15) had never been hospitalized and 28.2% (n=7) answered “yes” to the question of whether they would like to be nurses when they grew up. After the interviews, the themes of treatment practices, assisting doctors, and care practices (patient and child) related to practices of nurses were determined in line with the answers received from the children. Conclusion: It was found that the children considered the nursing profession as an occupation that includes giving injections, implementing treatments, helping doctors, caring for patients and children, and healing patients, and that a majority of the children did not want to be a nurse in the future.
