Abstract

Anaerobic bacteria can cause infection in all parts of the body. They are one of the most important causes of blood stream infections. In culture they are detec- ted in 1-17 of cases. Early recognition, and appropri- ate surgical and medical therapy are essential to ensure recovery. Predisposing factors for anaerobic bacteremia (AB) in children are immune deficiency, malignancy, haematological disorders, chronic renal failure, decubit ulcers and catheter-related infections. This case report presents the detection of concurrent peritoncillary abscess, orbital abscess and pulmo- nary abscess, and the growth of the same microorga- nisms (Peptostreptococcus) in cultures taken from three different sites in a 14-year-old girl known to have been healthy previously and carrying no risk of AB.
