Abstract

The island of Lesbos which is a few kilometers away from Anatolian coasts remained under Turkish rule from 1462 to 1912. Ottomans who governed the island where they considered as a part of their homeland for 450 years, equipped these lands with many architectural works through construction activities. The Vigla (Yalı) Mosque, which locates in the Mytilene, the central city of the island, is one of these works. It is said that the mosque was built to commemorate the conquest of the Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror in 1462 and had been one of the most popular worship places for Muslims. Greeks were located to the districts which were left by the Muslims of Mytilene due to exchange of populations. Greeks turned Vigla (Yalı) Mosque into a church but they did not convert the kiblah. Thus, the only church which is facing to Mecca emerged. In his article the story of the Vigla (Yalı) Mosque will be presented with an overview of the history of the island of Lesbos
