Abstract

The aim of this study is find out the punishments at school with the narratives of those who are now at the age between 60 and 70 and were primary school students at 1950s in Yozgat and see their ruptures and continuities in education through history. Bringing out the punishments that either they or their friends were exposed with the words of the period’s students is important for the educational practices. The method of this study is oral history methodology. Totally 22 people who were primary school students in 1950s in Yozgat were reached via snow ball method. The interviews were actualized with these people with a recording device; two of them were for testing. Unlike the real names of the interviewed people, the narratives of the graduates of the period were presented in their original form. Exclusively, since the punishments like beating seemed to be leading and was more common in the rural areas. This reveals that there is a relation between the types of punishments and where they got their primary school education. Namely, it displays the density of the punishment was increasing higher from the city center to periphery. The previously performed studies about the primary school punishments also verify similar results depending on where they got their education. It has been noticed that while there are only a few examples of those who were students in the city center and got beaten, in the rural areas this punishment was to be found normal and was more prevailing. This has been observed from the previously performed studies as well
