Abstract

The discussions over the Alphabet Reform, which gained momentum after the proclamation of the Republic, trace back to the Reorganizations years. Ottoman intellectuals who had initially touched upon the difficulties of adapting Arabic letters to the Turkish linguistic structure brought up the matter from time to time and tried to prove its necessity with scientific explanations. They offered different proposals for the solution of spelling problems. On the other hand, the majority standing up for Arabic letters revealed their own theses on the basis of scientific reasons. However, the number of those supporting the use of Latin alphabet increased especially after the proclamation of the Republic and their reasoning was oriented around adjusting to the modern western society, in other words modernization. At the same time, some intellectuals wrote articles mocking the old writing system and even insulted Arabic letters. Ahmet Hasim and Refik Halid Karay are among these names. Ahmet Hasim not only defended ruling out Arabic letters, but also claimed that calligraphy, which is performed with Arabic letters, had been an art form of the past. However, some of the intellectuals who once supported the use of Latin letters regretted that later.
