Abstract

In Turkey and especially in Kars region, curses are widely used in situations of anger and inability to find response to the expectations, as they are used all over the world. While some of the curses are known to everyone, some are unique to regions and even to individuals. On the other hand, while curses are used as revenge expressions, sometimes instead of direct use of these expressions, indirect use of them as euphemism is also widespread. The aim of this study, which carries qualitative research features, is to determine the features of euphemism in the curses of Kars region. Related to the issue, the curses obtained from 240 people (140 females and 100 males) living in Kars central and central villages were analyzed in terms of content and divided into groups and 154 valid curses which bear euphemism features were evaluated. It was found that curses used in and around the center of Kars have often euphemism features and therefore, some of them were determined to have implicit attributions. The curses with euphemism features grouped under 4 main headings. These were death (f = 65, 42,2%), pain / distress / disease (f = 42, 27,3%), loneliness (f = 30,19,5%) and poverty / famine (f=17, 11.0%).
