Abstract

It is referred in the literature that terrorism increases uncertainty, and reduces expected return to investment which results in economic underdevelopment. This study aims to explore the impact of terrorism on the educational investment for female children which would increase the expected wage level. In this study, we examine empirically impacts of the terrorist attacks on the gender inequality in education at provincial level in Turkey. Estimation results indicate that terrorist attacks increase the gender inequality at high school level, but not at primary school level. According to the estimation results; terrorist attacks increase the gender gap in education at provinces that are distant to provinces where terrorist attacks frequently occurs. Additionally, estimation results indicate that increasing conservatism leads to gender gap in education, however, education, income level and immigration variables do not significantly affect the gender gap in education.
