Abstract
In this article, modem institutions have critically been analyzed mainly for then- working mechanisms and philosophy. The author points out that, the modern institutions make the social life increasingly dependent on them as a whole. Innumerable institutions functioning in the field of politics, administration, economics, education, health, security and entertainment or spare time have established formal and effective operation mechanisms which are rational within them. With their increasing power, their • reservations, power and manipulation skills on the individuals have increased as well. This cause the feeling of constraint, loss of freedom, loss of meaning, stress, depression, social and mental problems experienced by the society. For this reason, many sociologists define today's society with metaphors such as iron cage, prison, mental hospital, factory, mcdonald restaurant or watchtower, etc. Negative impacts of the concerned rational institutions on the society have forced many sociologists to develop a critical approach. In the study, pathological impacts imposed by various types of institutional structures on the society are clarified on the base of the well known theorists'approaches.
