Abstract

The aim ofthis study was to describe the sociodemographical and clinical cha-racteristics of clinically referred children and adolescents with obsessive compulsive di-sorder (OCD). Method: For this purpose the clinical records of children and adolescents who were admitted to the Hacettepe University Faculty ofMedicine Department ofChild and Adolescent Psychiatry in the 1984-1994 period were reviewed. Among them 125 children and adolescents who fulfilled the DSM- TV criteria for OCD were examined. Re-sults: The 125 subjects, 71 boys (56.8%) and 54 giriş (43.2%) had a mean age of 11.7+ 3.2 years at admission. Seventy öne percent of subjects received comorbid diagnosis of other psychiatric disorders particularly anxiety and affective disorders. it is found that 48% of the patients had obsessions and 91.2% had compıılsions. While 52% of subjects showed only compulsions and 8.8% showed only obsessions, 39.2% had both of them. The .most frequent obsessive content was tlıe thought of something terrible happening (death/illness of şelf ör loved öne) followed by concern about dirt and the most common form ofcompulsion was washing-cleaning. Discussion: in this study sociodemographical and clinical features of 125 patients with OCD were examined retrospectively. Although some features could not be evaluated in detail because of the retrospective design, the re-sults ofthis study can contribute to further developments in the nosological area.
