Bulgular: Araştırmada öğrencilerin 49’u kız, %51’i erkektir. Öğrencilerin %10,9’u ana sınıf, %19,8’i 1. sınıf, %16.’sı 2. sınıf, %32,8’i 3. sınıf, %20,5’i 4. sınıftır. Öğrencilerin yaş ortalaması 7,9±1,42 (range: 4-11)’dir. Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerin %9,1’inde kırma kusuru, %3.3’ünde şaşılık, %3’ünde renk körlüğü şüphesinin olduğu saptanmıştır. Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerin %0,7’si objeye bakarken her zaman gözlerini kıstığını, %1,1’i tahtaya ve televizyona bakarken her zaman zorluk çektiğini belirtirken, %9,5’inin gözlük kullandığı belirlenmiştir. Araştırmadaki öğrencilerin %65,5’i kitap okurken, ödevlerini yaparken görme ile ilgili zorluk çekmediklerini belirtmişlerdir.
Abstract
Objective: This is a descriptive study conducted to identify visual impairments or eye conditions in students attending a primary school at the city center of Aydın. Methods: Study data were collected in a primary school at the city center of Aydın in the autumn and spring semestres of the academic year of 2015-2016. The population of the study consisted of 2583 students. As there were students who were absent during the days of the study was conducted, we could not access to the entire population. The study sample consisted of 2531 students. For data collection, “Socio-demographic Characteristics Data Form”, “Refractive Error Evaluation Form”, “Crossed-Eyes Evaluation Form” and “Colour Blindness Evaluation Form” developed by the researchers were used. Data were analysed using the SPSS 15.0 Statistical Software Package Program and evaluated with percentage, arithmetic mean and chi square tests. Results: In this research, 49% of the students were female and 51% of them were male. The students were in pre-school period (10.9%), 1st grade (19.8%), 2nd grade (16.2%), 3rd grade (32.8%), and 4th grade (20.5%). The mean age of the students was 7.9±1.42 (range 4-11) years, while 9.1% of the students had a refractive error, 3.3% had strabismus (crossed-eyes), 3% of them had suspect colour blindness. A small number (0.7%) of the students indicated that they were always squinting their eyes when looking at objects, and 1.1% of them always experienced visual problems when looking at the blackboard, and television. Besides, 9.5% of them used prescription glasses and 77.8% of them had no trouble seeing the whiteboard in the class. Still 65.5% of the students reported that they had no visual problem when they read or did their homework. It was found that as students’ ages increased, the percentage of visual impairments among them also increased. There was a statistically significant difference between school years (grades) for colour blindness and refractive error (p 0.05). There was a statistically significant relationship between the gender of students and colour blindness (p<0.05). Conclusion: according to the results of this study, primary school students with suspect visual impairments such as refractive error, colour blindness and crossed eyes may be detected at an early stage, and referred to the relevant units.
