Abstract

Objective: Health is one of the most important service sector. In order to receive the best, and high quality health care services, material, and moral requirements of health care workers should be satisfied. Intensive care departments are among the most critical units of the hospitals. Patients receiving care in the intensive care units have the maximum life risks. This condition incurs serious stress on the health workers who assume responsibility for the car, and treatment of these risky patients.Material and Methods: The purpose of this study was to measure the work stress of intensive care personnel. The participants of the study were 115 intensive care personnel working in Antalya Education and Research Hospital. Data were gathered through a “Work Stress Survey.” performed in collaboration with intensive care unit workers. The survey had three main categories. In the first part “Personal Characteristics” of the survey population were analyzed. The second part consisted of the responses given to the questions related to the “vocational evaluation”. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques. Results: The findings indicated that there were statistically significant differences between levels of work stress, occupation, age, sex and marital status. Discussion and Conclusion: The results of this study showed that job definitions of the intensive care unit workers should be precisely made so as to reduce the the impact of working hours on the private lives of the personnel. Secondly, wages should be increased to meet the needs of the personnel. Increasing the number of health workers employed in the intensive care units will decrease work load, which consequently may increase the motivation of the workers.
