Transformation of Political Tendencies in Turkey: An Analysis Within the Context of Local Elections

Özet

Türkiye’de son dönemde yapılan seçimlerde, siyasal eğilimler ve bu eğilimlerin partilere dağılımları bakımından önemli kırılmalara tanık olunmuştur. Bu kırılmalar siyaset sahnesinde yaşanan değişimlerin yanında, ulusal ve küresel düzeyde yaşanan siyasal, ekonomik ve toplumsal dönüşümlere de işaret etmektedir. 1960’lı yılların başlarından bu yana yapılan dokuz yerel seçim sonuçlarının da ulusal siyasetteki gelişmelerle yakından ilişkili olduğu görülmektedir. Bu çalışma, söz konusu dokuz yerel seçimin verilerini, siyasal eğilimleri ve siyasal eğilimlerdeki değişimleri, eğilimlerdeki bu değişimlerin ve son yıllarda seçmen tercihlerinde gözlenen kırılmanın olası nedenlerini incelemeyi ve çözümlemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu doğrultuda, il genel meclisi ve belediye başkanlığı seçimleri çalışma kapsamına alınmıştır.

Abstract

We have witnessed important fractures with regard to political tendencies and their distribution among political parties in the recent political elections in Turkey. Such fractures reflect the changes in the political landscape as well as the national and global socioeconomic and political transformation. It seems that the results of the nine local elections held since the 1960’s have had strong similarities and relations with national political developments. This study aims to review and analyze the data related to the nine local elections with regard to the political tendencies in the elections and shifts in these tendencies along with the possible reasons for these shifts and the recent fracture in the political choices of the voters. For this purpose, provincial council elections and mayor elections have been included in the study.
